The importance of using contrast to make a place attractive

When we talk about art in any form, since ancient times artists have had the same goal - to attract the attention of the viewer. To achieve visual appeal and to make their art unique and noticeable.

Is interior design art? Yes, of course! It’s actually one of the most exciting and creative art forms. After all, everything we do with passion and inspiration is essentially a form of creation, and wherever there is color and harmony, there is art.

That is why we often use contrast in interiors too. It’s quite an effective technique that creates visual dynamics and draws the eye. This is an indisputable fact.

By combining forms, materials or colors that are extremely different from each other and as a rule do not suit well, we actually give the opportunity for separate elements to stand out at the same time.

Contrast, as I already mentioned, can be used in several different directions in interior design. I will pay attention on several that I myself applied in the interior of the last property that I prepared for sale.

§  Contrasting colors

Contrasting colors makes objects stand out. Let's take a peek inside the fireplace area of the house that I last worked on - a beautiful and spacious property in Los Altos with 6 bedrooms, two floors and a truly fabulous backyard.

Nothing in the interior is accidental. As always, everything is chosen after consideration and for a specific purpose. The dark frames of the windows stand out wonderfully against the background of the white lining of the walls. This immediately turns the windows into an accent, and accentuating the source of natural light is always an excellent choice. It’s the same with all the windows in the house.

Let’s take another example - the kitchen island with the three dark hanging lamps above it also clearly contrast with the white oak floor.

Using this technique, potential buyers are literally led on a visual walk with short stops at key interior zones or objects - the dark dining table against the background of the light carpet below and the six light chairs, the black handles of the white cabinets in the kitchen, the black frames on the mirrors in the bright bathrooms, even the dark picture frames on the walls. The eye registers these contrasts, noticing important elements that might otherwise be missed.

§  Contrasting materials

Humans discover the world through their senses. Therefore an interior with monotony of materials and uniform surfaces does not arouse interest and a desire to explore.

On the other hand, mixing wood, metal, textiles and even glass is a classic approach that can transform even the most boring room into a charming and cozy place. You can see this combination in almost all the chairs that we had used in this house or the attractive console table next to the front door:

In this area the contrasting of materials is especially evident. We have wood, metal, glass, even a porcelain vase in just a few square meters. The senses are provoked, as well as the interest of prospective buyers. And this is exactly our ultimate goal.

§  Contrasting shapes

Curvy, square or abstract shapes affect the feeling of a space differently. Curvy or round objects such as the rattan table in front of the fireplace, are perfect for relaxing areas as they represent softness and harmony.

However this is not at all the only impression we aim to create. It’s simply not enough. Rectangular shapes come to the rescue here. These are usually found in windows and doors and they represent stability and efficiency. That’s why we often place them in working areas as well – kitchens or offices.

In conclusion - it’s all about highlighting distinctions. Mixing contrasting elements generates visual interest, making the design unique and appealing.  Interiors lacking contrast often tend to lack excitement too and can be easily overlooked among countless others.

Nevertheless balance is also very, very important. With the aimless and thoughtless mixing of different materials and shades, you can achieve negative effect as well. You are definitely not looking for the effect of kitsch and stuffiness. The creation of an impactful interior takes an exceptional consideration of the functional and visual features of the specific space. You should always have that in mind and keep your designs classy and harmonious.
